Death of a dead man

Death of a dead man
The quiescence of the dead to object to their eternal confinement six feet below, certifies the reality of their non-existence. We, the living, also grope in a void of vanity that we proudly call existence. The movement of the living from the void to the darkroom below is wrapped in mystery. I have seen mysteries to a point of not being mystery-awe.
The Agagu episode was not a mystery as such but something like it. A dead man Olusegun Agagu was enclosed in a casket of gold with all his vanished accomplishments – former governor   of Ondo State, former chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Minister of this and that, Dr this. Chief that, ex- His Excellency etc. His corpse was on the way to its final resting place in Iju Odo in Ondo State. The man in the small metal box was isolated in the belly of the plane while others were seated in the cabin. The man could no longer sit with the living among whom were my good friend, Tunji Okusanya (Snr) a.k.a. Rector, his son, Tunji (Jnr) and other people of mixed importance. In less than two minutes of take-off, the plane crashed and closed the gap between the living and the dead. The accident was a dramatic illustration of the dead burying the dead.

Carpenter's spacecraft overshot its landing target by some 250 nautical miles, giving rise to fears about his fate.
With Carpenter's death, Glenn is the lone survivor of the Mercury 7, which included Carpenter, Glenn, L. Gordon Cooper, Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Walter Schirra, Alan Shepard and Donald "Deke" Slayton.
Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first person to orbit Earth in April 1961.
'Pioneer' of inner and outer space
Carpenter was born in Boulder, Colorado, and attended the University of Colorado, where he studied aeronautical engineering. He retired from the Navy in 1969, after some two decades of service.
Post-NASA, Carpenter explored underwater environments as an aquanaut in the Navy's Man in the Sea Project -- at one point living and working on the ocean floor for 30 days straight. He later served as director of the Navy's aquanaut operations.
"I still can't make up my mind whether I like outer or inner space better," Carpenter said last year -- adding with a smile, "But there's a difference in glory."
Carpenter's memoir, "For Spacious Skies: The Uncommon Journey of a Mercury Astronaut," was published in 2003. He also wrote two novels.
"He was one of the good guys and a good friend, a pioneer who made significant contributions to our country," said Dick Gordon, command module pilot for Apollo 12 Photos: People we lost in 2013

Libyan Prime Minister kidnapped at gun point from hotel

A country where even the prime minister is not safe from kidnapping. Choi. Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan was kidnapped in the early hours of this morning from the Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli by suspected former rebels who even took a pic of them with him and shared it online (inset).

Mr Zeidan, who became Prime Minister just eleven months ago after living in exile for many years, was seized in what is believed to be retaliation for the capture by American forces of a wanted al-Qaeda-linked operative at the weekend, BBC reports.
"The head of the transitional government, Ali Zeidan, was taken to an unknown destination for unknown reasons," a government statement posted on the prime minister's Facebook site said.
Officials said that two "revolutionary brigades" were responsible for the kidnap - the "Operations Room of Revolutionaries" and the "Brigade for the Fight against Crime". His current whereabout is unknown.

The Exploitation Of The Unemployed By Government Agencies

Recruitment Fee, Nigeria Immigration Service And A New Form Of Corruption – By Karl Mantis Earl
It is indeed a huge surprise that not many commentators are alarmed by the on-going exploitation of hapless, jobless Nigerians by various government agencies in the name of recruitment – most notably and presently, the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Air Force. For those who are not in the know, I would offer a little enlightenment. Two weeks ago, the Nigeria Immigration Service invited suitably qualified Nigerians to send in applications for a number of vacancies advertised by the service. I would not bore you with the specifics of their offerings in three categories with requirements ranging from SSCE certificates to university degrees or its equivalent but I would keep the issue straight on the subject of this essay – the exploitation of Nigerians by government agencies. Weeks earlier, the Nigeria Air Force has placed her own adverts inviting young Nigerians to apply to become tradesmen/women. I am sure majority are already familiar with the yearly recruitment by the Nigerian Army. That one happened earlier in the year but much like these two on offer this season; applicants were asked to pay “recruitment fees.”
For immigration, the recruitment fee is a thousand naira across the three categories while the Nigeria Air Force requires her would-be applicants to have a richer purse as they would have to fork out two thousand five hundred naira to be eligible for consideration in the recruitment exercise. The Nigeria Army collects a thousand naira from each of her applicants.
What is wrong with collecting a token from applicants who are not complaining? Many are wont to ask this question over and over again. I know there are many Nigerians who would happily pay a million naira to get into any of these agencies. I also know there are youths who would even prefer a higher charge as that would make it difficult for majority to apply and hence increase their chances of being considered. To these people, whatever I am going to say here would certainly make no sense. They would plainly dismiss me and advise that I get a job. I have no apologies to offer them. In the first place, I do not write to please them and hence I am under no obligation to write what they would “like.”

Lagos detains dozens of rams, owners appeal for release

Officials of the the Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit have confiscated dozens of rams on display for sale in a prohibited area of the state.
The task force from the governor’s office had chased the ram sellers who converged at Ijora-Olopa area and carted their rams to an unknown detention centre.
The owners of the rams claimed they were unaware that their sales point was prohibited and also claimed they were not forewarned.
The ram sellers, with seven days left to the Eid-el-Kabir festival, have appealed to Gov. Babatunde Fashola to release the rams.
They made the appeal on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Mr Muhammed Mudi, leader of the ram sellers, expressed shock over the development, saying that the situation was embarrassing.Mudi said that they were not expecting the officials since they had had approached an official of the Ministry of Agriculture who gave them permission to sell rams at the location.
“An official from Agriculture Ministry gave us permission to use this place, but I was surprised when I heard that he had been arrested.
“These ram sellers came from Sokoto State and they are not aware of the relocation order.
“That is why we are appealing to the governor to allow us to make our sales here this year; we promise not to bring our rams here next year, “ he said.
Mudi said that the task force came to the market and carted away their rams in trucks.
Sulaiman Saliu, one of the ram sellers, said that bringing the rams to Lagos was expensive and urged the government to allow them to sell their rams.

SPEECH: President Goodluck Jonathan Inaugurates Advisory Committee On National Dialogue

President Goodluck Jonathan and Senator Okunroumu
President Jonathan and members of the Advisory Committee on National Dialogue in a group photograph

1.     Today, we are taking historic and concrete steps that will further strengthen our understanding, expand the frontiers of our inclusiveness and deepen our bond as one people under God.
2.      In my address to the Nation on the occasion of our 53rd Independence and Golden Anniversary as a Republic, I announced that in response to the yearnings of our people, we had decided to take on the responsibility of decisively and genuinely exploring the option of a National Conversation.
3.    In furtherance of this objective, Government announced the names of some Nigerians, with wide experience from various disciplines, to form membership of an Advisory Committee to facilitate a most acceptable process that will bring our aspirations to fruition. Our gathering here today is to formally inaugurate this child of necessity, the Advisory Committee to midwife this Conversation.
4.    Permit me to very quickly review the foundational principles that drive our action, and also address a few matters arising. Firstly, let me emphasize that this is a National Project, a sincere and fundamental undertaking, aimed at realistically examining and genuinely resolving, longstanding impediments to our cohesion and harmonious development as a truly united Nation.
5.            There is a view by some of our people that we do not need to sit together to dialogue over the socio-political challenges facing our country. Some believe that because we have held several Conferences in the past, we do not need to hold another one. I was one of those who exhibited scepticism on the need for another Conference or Dialogue. My scepticism was borne out of the nomenclature of such a Conference, taking into cognizance existing democratic structures that were products of the will of the people.
6.            However, we are in a democracy, and in a democracy; elected leaders govern at the behest of the citizenry. As challenges emerge, season after season, leaders must respond with best available strategies to ensure that the ship of state remains undeterred in its voyage.
7.            Nations rise to the challenges that each epoch presents. It is imperative therefore, that in our march to nationhood, we have to be dynamic in our approach and response to the problems, even as we seek solutions to them. We cannot proffer yesterday's solutions to today's problems.
8.            Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, let us remind ourselves of the gains from previous Conferences and Dialogues. The Conferences that were held before 1960 were designed to produce a political system and a roadmap to Nigeria's independence.
9.            The Constitutional Conference of 1957 in London, for example, effectively prepared Nigeria for Independence. The Eastern and Western regions were granted self-government in 1957, while the Northern region got its own in 1959. The Office of the Prime Minister was created and it was also decided that the Federal Legislature would be Bi-cameral.

Nobel medical prize goes to 2 Americans, 1 German

The Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine starts a week of announcements in Stockholm, Sweden.
Two Americans and a German shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine this year.
Americans James E. Rothman and Randy W. Schekman, and German Thomas C. Sudhof were awarded the prize Monday for discoveries of how the body's cells decide when and where to deliver the molecules they produce.
The Nobel Assembly said the three "have solved the mystery of how the cell organizes its transport system."
Their work focuses on tiny bubbles inside cells called vesicles, which move hormones and other molecules within cells and sometimes outside them, such as when insulin is released into the bloodstream.
Disruptions of this delivery system contribute to diabetes, neurological diseases and immunological disorders.
Rothman, a professor at Yale University, detailed how protein machinery allows vesicles in cells to fuse with their targets to permit the transfer of molecular cargo.
Photos: The Nobel Prize winners of 2012 Photos: The Nobel Prize winners of 2012
Schekman, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, was honored for discovering a set of genes required for the "vesicle traffic."
Sudhof, a professor at Stanford University, showed how vesicles are instructed precisely when to release molecules.
Schekman and Sudhof also are investigators at Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Monday's ceremony at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, will be followed by the announcement of the physics prize Tuesday, the chemistry prize Wednesday and the economics prize on October 14.
The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in Oslo, Norway, on Friday. The prize for literature will be awarded on a date to be announced later. Each prize comes with 8 million Swedish kronor ($1.2 million).
Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel created the prizes in 1895 to honor work in physics, chemistry, literature and peace. The first economics prize was awarded in 1969.
In 2012, the medical Nobel Prize was awarded to Sir John B. Gurdon of England and Shinya Yamanaka of Japan for work on reprogramming cells. Their work paved the way for treatment breakthroughs.

Agagu family insensitive to continue with the burial says Association of Undertakers

Funeral managers in Lagos are not happy with late Gov Agagu's family, Encomium magazine reports exclusively. The Association of Undertakers in Lagos are of the opinion that the Agagu family were insensitive to their plight by going ahead with the burial of the former governor when their own man, Mr Tunji Okusanya of MIC did not only lose his life but also his son and four of his staff in the plane crash on Thursday October 3rd.

So for this members of the association refused to sell another casket to them or partake in the funeral rites. In an interview with Mr Deinde Harrison, the boss of Ebony Caskets and Funeral Managers, he told Encomium the association's anger with the Agagu family. Read the interview after the cut...

Street Smart' Boy Hops on Flight to Las Vegas Alone

'Street Smart' Boy Hops on Flight to Las Vegas Alone (ABC News)
A "very street smart" nine-year-old boy managed to pass through a security checkpoint at a Minnesota airport and hop on a flight to Las Vegas without a boarding pass, authorities said.
The boy arrived alone at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Thursday morning, airport spokesman Patrick Hogan told ABC News.
He was screened by TSA officials and then headed to an airport concourse, where he boarded an 11:15 a.m. flight on Delta to Sin City.
The flight crew became suspicious of the nine-year-old's travel circumstances and called the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, who took the boy into custody upon landing, Hogan said. He was then transferred into the care of child protective services.
"The fact that the child's actions weren't detected until he was in flight is concerning," he said. "More than 33 million people travel through Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport every year, and I don't know of another instance in my 13 years at the airport in which anything similar has happened.
"Fortunately, the flight crew took appropriate actions to ensure the child's safety, so the story does have a good ending," Hogan said.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Bill Cassell told ABC News the boy was "more worldly than most nine-year-old kids."
"He was able to get onto an airline where he didn't have a ticket and made it five states across the U.S.," he said. "If it hadn't been for alert airline employees on our end, he probably never would have been discovered."
Cassell did not know if the boy had been reunited with his family, but said that the boy's mother, child protective services and Delta Airlines were working to develop a plan to bring him home after the incident occurred.
A spokesman for Delta Airlines said the incident was under investigation, but would not elaborate on the details of the case.

Agagu’s family to go ahead with his burial today

Despite the great tragedy that occurred yesterday, where the plane carrying Agagu's corpse crashed and killed 15 people, members of the late governor's family have insisted that they will go ahead with his burial. The Chairman of Ondo State PDP, Mr. Ebenezer Alabi, made  this  known yesterday.
“We have just consulted with the family and it has been decided that they would go ahead with the burial. This is more so that his  son, and son-in-law survived the crash. We are also aware that the casket bearing Agagu’s  body  was not affected by the crash. While we  sympathise with the families of  those who lost their  loved ones  in the crash, we  will go ahead with the burial.” He said
Agagu will be buried today at his home town in Iju-Odo, Okitipupa LGA of Ondo state. St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Iju-Odo has been and renovated for the burial service while major roads leading into the town had been rehabilitated. The  grave where Agagu will be  buried  in the church cemetery has also  been decorated to give him a befitting farewell, News Agency of Nigeria reports. See more photos after the cut...
