UK council blacklists UNIJOS, UNN, other medical graduates

The British General Medical Council has barred medical graduates of nine Nigerian universities from practising in the United Kingdom.
The GMC, an independent body of regulators which registers medical doctors to practise in the UK, in a directory released on Wednesday, blacklisted  medical graduates that completed their courses after December 2010 from the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; University of Benin, Edo State; University of Jos; University of Nigeria, and the University of Port Harcourt from practising in the UK.
Others affected are medical graduates from Ambrose Ali University, Ebonyi State University, Igbinedion University College of Health Sciences and Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
The directory stated that although their medical schools were currently listed in the Avicenna Directory of Medical Schools, a developing public database of worldwide Medical Schools and other health profession, the GMC would not be registering or issuing a licence to practise to graduates who hold primary medical qualifications obtained from these Nigerian universities.
It also noted that medical graduates from these schools would be not permitted to make a booking for or to take the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test, an examination that enables non-UK medical graduates to practise in the country.
A Nigerian blog quoted an official of the GMC's press office, Jason Day, as saying that the schools were delisted because they had failed to meet the required standards for practice in the UK.
He added that the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria had earlier advised some universities to suspend accreditation of some medical schools in the country.
“The decision only applies to students who graduated from those medical schools after the MDCN suspended their accreditation,” it quoted Jay as saying.
The body also listed schools in 16 countries whose medical graduates would undergo rigorous procedures to practise in the UK.
The GMC stated,  “All international medical graduates must possess an acceptable primary medical qualification to apply for registration with a licence to practise. In addition, international medical graduates will be required to demonstrate their medical knowledge and skills, knowledge of English, and fitness to practise before they are registered with a licence to practice.”
However, 13 other medical schools are still approved on the Avicenna Directory including the Abia State University College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Uturu; Ahmadu Bello University Faculty of Medicine, Zaria; Dan Fodio University College of Health Sciences, Sokoto; Enugu State University of Science and Technology. College of Medicine, Enugu.
Others are Imo State University College of Medicine, Owerri; Lagos State University College Of Medicine, Ikeja; Nnamdi Azikiwe University College of Health Sciences, Nnewi; Obafemi Awolowo University College of Health Sciences, Ile-Ife; Olabisi Onabanjo University; Obafemi Awolowo College of Health Sciences, Sagamu; University of Calabar.
College of Medical Sciences, Calabar; University of Ibadan, College of Medicine, University College Hospital, Ibadan; University of Ilorin Faculty of Health Sciences, Ilorin; University of Lagos College of Medicine, Lagos; and the University of Maiduguri College of Medical Sciences, Maiduguri.

Housewife impregnated by boyfriend dies in illegal clinic

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested four persons for their alleged role in the death of a married woman identified simply as Seyi.
PUNCH METRO learnt that on December 12, 2011, the four suspects; Adebayo Oloko 29, Igbasan Tunde 36, Funmi Akinjomo and Kunle Owomi 36, were arrested while trying to dispose of the corpses of the deceased and her baby.
A police source, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that the suspects were arrested at midnight by security operatives attached to ‘OPERATION MESA.’
He said, “On the said date, around 1am, the suspects were trying to dispose of the corpses at a nearby Lagoon by Alimi Street, Ebute Ilaje, when they were apprehended by men of OP MESA.
“Oloko claimed the deceased was his wife and she had died during labour. However, the policemen were not satisfied with his alibi and we launched an investigation.”
It was learnt that policemen attached to Bariga Police Division, immediately launched a full-scale investigation wherein it was revealed that the deceased was actually married to someone else.
The source said, “The police learnt that Oloko was a next door neighbour of the deceased and had a sexual liaison with her thereby impregnating her.  It was discovered in the course of investigation that the deceased was even married to someone else.
“It was also learnt that prior to the tragic incident, the deceased had been going for ante-natal care at another hospital in company with her husband. But on the day she went into labour, her husband was not at home and Oloko took her elsewhere.
“Consequently, the deceased was rushed to a make-shift clinic where she was in labour for 14 hours before she finally gave up the ghost.”
When our correspondent visited the make-shift clinic located at a one-room shack on Olatunji  Street, Ebute-Ilaje, it was learnt that it was the residence of Akinjomo, a 53-year-old quack nurse and one of the detained suspects.
The case has been transferred to the homicide unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department.
When our correspondent visited the SCID, it was learnt that the suspects confessed to the crime in written statements but denied that they were attempting to dispose of the corpses.
A senior police officer at the SCID, who craved anonymity,  said, “Oloko was the boyfriend and father of the deceased baby, he took the woman to the clinic. Igbasan is the doctor; Akinjomo is the nurse and Owomi is an accomplice.
“Detectives learnt that Igbasan, who was helping to deliver of the baby, was not a real doctor. He had only received training at Ondo State School of Health Technology where he was certified as a community health extension worker in 2002. It was probably his inexperience that prolonged the labour.”

TORRESS HITS BACK OVER "LIES" .

Once a hero on Merseyside, Torres is now a hate figure after agreeing a £50 million move in the January window. He suggested he was told lies by Liverpool's owners, and also said he is bemused by the Liverpool fans' attitude towards him.
In an interview with Spanish TV station Canal+ Liga, Torres said: "The Liverpool fans don't know the truth about why I signed for Chelsea. The fans don't even know half of what happened. They don't know what the people in charge at Liverpool are like - they have a completely different perception of what they are like.
"They made promises that they didn't keep and I left because I realised I didn't have time to be part of a project that would take years. I have nothing against the Liverpool fans. I didn't want to leave Liverpool the way I did but the club lied. I was let down and I don't understand why the fans hate me."
Torres' move to Chelsea has, so far, been an unmitigated disaster, scoring just three Premier League goals. The only game he has started since November 1 is the Carling Cup tie with Liverpool and he has been an unused substitute in their last two matches.
But the Spain international is determined to rediscover the form which saw him score 56 goals in his first three Premier League seasons.
"I am going to try to be very humble and get back into the Chelsea starting line-up," he added. "My form has not been good but I am world and European champion and I deserve more respect.
"It's hard being on the bench but I respect the players who are playing. I'm going to support the team and get back in.
"It's true that [Spain head coach] Vicente del Bosque is worried about me and my form for Chelsea. It's up to me to go back to being the striker I was before. If I go back to how I was a few years ago, I will again play an important role in the Spanish national team."

Two Men Docked For Raping Man

Two men, Chinenye Peter, 30 and Elijah Michael, 23 have been arraigned before the Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, southwest Nigeria for sleeping with a man they met on Facebook.
The men, who are friends, were accused of raping their Facebook friend, Bosun Fayankinnu, after stripping him naked.
The police alleged that the accused stripped him naked and fondled his penis before inserting their manhood in his anus. After the act, they demanded money from him in return for his nude photographs taken during the indecent act.
The incident happened at 11, Appollo Street, Makoko, Yaba Lagos, residence of the accused.
P.M.NEWS gathered that Chinenye and Michael met Fayankinnu on the Facebook. They started chatting before Fayankinnu decided to pay them a visit in their house at Yaba.
It was during the visit that the duo allegedly assaulted the victim by raping him.
The men, however, denied that they forcefully stripped him naked. They claimed that he stripped himself naked.
The victim, it was learnt, parted with his handsets and ATM card as a condition for his release and promised to bring the money requested by the accused.
On the arranged day, the complainant lodged a report at the Adekunle Station and policemen followed him to the house where they arrested the accused.
They were arraigned on a 12-count charge of criminal conspiracy, assault and unnatural offence under sections 352, 516 and 353 of the Criminal Code, Cap.17, Vol. 2, Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.
One of the charges read: “That you, the defendants on the same date, time and place, did strip the victim naked and fondle his penis and other parts of his body.”
Another count reads: “That you, the defendants at the same time, place and date did attempt to penetrate the victim’s anus with your penis.”
They pleaded not guilt to the charges and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. S. K. Matepo, granted them bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was later struck out because the complainant refused to show up in court.
