Bulgarian legend Valentin Yordanov sent back his Olympic gold medal
from the 1996 Atlanta Games on Wednesday, to protest the International
Olympic Committee’s decision to drop wrestling from the Olympic program.
The 53-year-old is the president of the Bulgarian wrestling
federation and won an unprecedented 10 world championship medals during
his career.
Some of Bulgarian wrestling’s biggest names have already expressed their support for Yordanov, saying they believed that the IOC would scrap the plans to drop the sport. The plans have to be ratified in September.
Wrestling has been Bulgaria’s most successful Olympic sport with the country’s athletes winning a total of 16 titles.
